The Story of The Original Happy Car
Soon after our son Evan was born my wife Maggie suggested that I take care of bathtime so that I could bond with Evan after being gone all day and also to give her a bit of a break. It was a great idea and over the months Evan and I had more and more fun together during his bath time.
Sometime around his second birthday a box of crayons made for drawing on the bath tub wall appeared in the bathroom, courtesy of Maggie. Evan liked scribbling on the wall and I would join in drawing dogs and cars. Once he realized that his dad could draw a thing or two he started making requests, so I drew whatever he wanted.
After a few weeks a trend developed. It was all about cars. I drew probably 10 cars a night. After drawing several hundred cars the image that is The Original Happy Car began to emerge. From there Evan started to request that I draw the "happy car".
During this time we had a lot going on. We were expecting our second child and Maggie's mother, Nelle, was staying with us in anticipation of the arrival. One evening I drew the car on Evan's etch-a-sketch and showed it to Nelle. She thought it was the cutest thing she's ever seen and Maggie agreed.
I have always had in the back of my mind that I wanted to create an apparel logo. As it turns out, sometimes when you are not looking, what you want appears out of nowhere or in this case, on the bathtub wall.
